Georgia Tech defensive lineman Antwan Owens will use his last season of eligibility elsewhere. The senior from Tallahassee, Fla., announced his decision Thursday to enter the transfer portal as a grad transfer. Owens, who is on track to graduate in the spring semester with a degree in history, technology and society, will have one season of eligibility remaining. Owens has played defensive end and tackle. Coming back from a season-ending lower-body injury in 2019, he played the final six games in 2020 and made eight tackles, one for loss, with one fumble recovery. A year ago, he started seven games and played eight before his injury, finishing with 21 tackles. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Saint Francis University, an FCS program in Pennsylvania that's in the Northeast Conference, last week notified its players that plans to play a spring season had been scratched. With that news, some players headed into the NCAA transfer portal. Two of those were the best offensive players on the team, junior quarterback Jason Brown (6-4, 230) and junior wide receiver E.J. Jenkins (6-8, 235), who announced a decision Friday to transfer. The natives of Fredericksburg, Virginia have played together since the seventh grade, and they want to continue to play together. On Tuesday they were contacted by South Carolina. If things work out, they could be headed to Columbia by the weekend. - Rock Hill Herald

Jackson State has added another transfer to its football roster. Former Louisville wide receiver Corey Reed Jr. has transferred to play for Jackson State and first-year coach Deion Sanders. Reed originally signed with Louisville in 2017 out of Roswell High School, which is just outside of Atlanta. He played in 13 games as a freshman wide receiver and caught eight passes for 145 yards. He played in two games in 2018 before transferring to Western Community College in 2019 and rejoining Louisville this past spring. Reed, who didn't record a stat for Louisville this season, entered the transfer portal on Dec. 3. Reed joins Ohio University transfer Shane Hooks and Nassau Community College transfer Joshua Okechukwu as recent additions to Jackson State's wide receiver corps. - Courier Journal

Linebacker Abdul-Malik McClain, who opted to enter the transfer portal after his family's relationship with USC and coach Clay Helton soured, has found a new home at Jackson State. McClain's mother, Shan, announced the news of his "next chapter" in a tweet Wednesday, eight days after she told The Times that Abdul-Malik and his brother, Munir, planned to leave USC. Munir McClain, the suspended wideout who became the focus of a federal probe into apparent unemployment fraud, initially entered the transfer portal along with his brother, but quickly removed his name.

For Abdul-Malik, there was little hesitation. With the NCAA expected to allow a one-time transfer exception in 2021, he should be granted immediate eligibility to play at Jackson State for new head coach - and NFL Hall of Famer - Deion Sanders. The notion of either McClain brother leaving seemed highly unlikely as recently as this summer. Abdul-Malik was expected to contribute as a rotational pass rusher in a new defense predicated on blitzing, while Munir continued to recover from a tear suffered last season to his anterior cruciate ligament. Both spoke glowingly of their ties to USC. - Los Angeles Times

Isaiah Bolden is coming to Jackson State to be part of the change he wants to see in the world. A former four-star recruit from Zephyrhills, Florida, Bolden announced his intent to transfer from Florida State to Jackson State last week. Speaking with the media Tuesday for the first time as a Jackson State Tiger, Bolden explained his decision. Bolden says he came to Jackson State for the opportunity not just to grow and prove himself as a football player but to do so at a historically black university.

Bolden wants to prove that football players from HBCUs can get to the NFL just like players from predominantly white institutions can. "I want to be part of the change," Bolden said. "It's going to take more than me to make the change. But at least I can help toward making the change. I'm taking on the responsibility to show recruits and transfers that you can come to an HBCU and get to the league. Me being a part of that change is a big thing for me." Bolden, who made nine tackles, two pass breakups and an interception for Florida State last season, said the motivation for this change comes from his experiences at Florida State. - Times Union

Coach Prime has arrived in Mississippi. Not even 12 hours after his inaugural press conference as Jackson State's head football coach, Deion Sanders lured a Power 5 player to his program. Mississippi State freshman defensive back Javorrius Selmon announced via Twitter on Tuesday evening his decision to leave MSU without having played a single game. He intends on teaming up with Sanders at JSU. "Big announcement first I would like to thank the entire Mississippi State football staff for the opportunity they gave me along with the love and support they showed but at this time I want to announce that I am coming home to play for Coach Prime!" Selmon said in his tweet. Selmon opted out of the 2020 season just over a week ago citing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. The Provine High School product won't have far to travel when he gets back on the playing field in 2021. He'll be playing for one of the best defensive backs in the history of the game, too. - The Clarion Ledger

Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders says he will become Jackson State's football coach. Sanders made the announcement Sunday night on the first episode of the "21st & Prime" podcast with Jamie Dukes on Barstool Sports. The player known as "Prime Time" during his career added, “Isn't the time? Isn't this the moment? Isn't this what's needed? It's a match made in heaven." Currently the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School-Cedar Hill in Texas, it will be Sanders' first head coaching job at the college level. "I've been offered pro jobs," Sanders added, "so people know I could be an assistant in any college." The move was first reported by the Clarion Ledger in Mississippi.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has scheduled a Monday news conference to make an announcement about the football program. On the podcast, Jackson State President Thomas Hudson called the hiring “the grace of God” and cited the football's program history in being able to land Sanders. "These things just come together," Hudson added, crediting athletic director Ashley Robinson and alumni. "We're just so very fortunate to really be in this space and have a man like this joining us." Sanders replaces John Hendrick, whose contract was not renewed this summer after going 6-9 and 5-5 in SWAC play. - AP College Football

Freshman Javorrius Selmon will sit out the season, joining junior Tyler Williams and senior defensive back turned wide receiver Taury Dixon as Bulldogs who have chosen not to play because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Selmon was in a position to play as a true freshman with Williams opting out and multiple corners from last year's roster leaving the program.   Auburn's defensive line took a hit last week with the dismissal of Coynis Miller Jr., who was competing with Newkirk for a starting job at defensive tackle. That leaves Auburn with just four defensive tackles on scholarship, though Hardy, a freshman, has the size at 6-foot-4 and 299 pounds to play inside. Bryant has emerged as the leader of the unit and is expected to have a breakout season at defensive end, while Truesdell returns to man his starting spot on the interior. - Birmingham News
